Boston Police report arresting a Dorchester man they say was in the middle of shoplifting at the CVS at 451 Washington St. in Dorchester when confronted by an off-duty officer who happened to be in the store at the time, around 11:30 a.m.
The off-duty officer identified himself as a Boston Police Officer and demanded the suspect to stop and drop the items. The suspect refused the officer’s orders and removed a hammer from his waistband. The officer was quickly able to disarm the suspect, and the suspect fled the scene.
Officers responding to the call began searching the area and located the suspect walking at a fast pace down Washington Street before turning left onto Algonquin Street. The officers exited their cruiser and demanded the suspect to stop.
Officers were able to stop the suspect, who immediately began to tense his body and pull his arms away from them. The suspect began to resist officers’ orders, but they were able to place him into handcuffs. Officers returned all the items which were valued at approximately $553.
Ricardo Montero, 36, of Dorchester, was charged with armed robbery, police say.
On March 13, Montero pleaded guilty in Roxbury Municipal Court to a charge of larceny under $1,200 for an incident on Columbus Avenue near Centre Street on Jan. 10, according to court records, which show he also had a second charge, of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, continued without a finding. The judge in the case sentenced him to 18 months in jail, but suspended that as long as he stayed out of trouble.
